Retirement: A Time For Hobbies

Other than a lack of money, the main thing that scares some people approaching retirement is the lack of things to do. Remember all of the times you wished you had more time to work on a project or build a hot rod or sail boat. Being involved in a hobby allows you to spend time enjoying what you do, and in retirement you always have the ability to do it when you want and to rest when you want.

Finding a hobby to help fill your time doesn't mean you have to pick something completely new. You can also spend more time doing things you liked to do when you were younger. For example if you lived on a farm as a kid then maybe you want to try horse riding again. Collecting things is always a popular past time. Anything can be collected from bottle caps to sports cards to dolls. And you can also always play sports such as basketball or football.

Although I am very far from retirement, my dreams are to take a trip around the world and write a book about it. Even though I would like to do these things now I don't have the time. Retirement gives you the opportunity to do what they wanted while they were working but never had the time. Having grandchildren also adds to the excitement of retirement. You will have the time to teach them things and tell them stories and share your wisdom. If you want to increase your creativity you can try painting by taking an art class.

But there is a lot more to hobbies than just collecting things or building things. Almost any activity that you enjoy doing can be considered a hobby. You can go to the local theatre and see a play every month or go swimming every week. There are always classified ads in the newspapers advertising activities organized for retirees. If a sportive activity is not your cup of tea then you can try sharpening your mental skills by joining a scrap booking club. This is also a great way to preserve all of your memories by organizing your photos in an artistic form.

If you want to try something else to occupy your time besides hobbies there is always volunteering. Schools and libraries are always looking for people to help them out with various things. Volunteers are always appreciated by the organizations that they serve.

Retirement is also a great way to get back in touch with nature. It is proven that being in nature has a lot of natural benefits to humans. Taking a daily walk in a nearby park or participating in a community garden is a great way to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. Your body and mind will benefit tremendously from these types of activities.
